Glyoxylic acid/CAS: 298-12-4
Description:
Glyoxylic acid, also known as formic acid, hydrated acetic acid, or oxoacetic acid, with the chemical formula C2H203, is the simplest aldehyde acid found in immature fruits, tender green leaves, and sugar beets. Crystallization from water is a monoclinic crystal system (containing 1/2 crystal water). The relative molecular weight is 70.04. Melting point 98 ℃. It has an unpleasant odor, is a highly corrosive acid, easily deliquescent, and can form a paste when exposed to air. Slightly soluble in ethanol, ether, and benzene, can dissolve freely in water, and the aqueous solution is stable and does not deteriorate in air. It exists in the form of hydration in aqueous solution. Except for stainless steel, it can react with most metals. It has both acidic and aldehyde properties. It can be added with sodium bisulfite or hydrocyanic acid, react with hydroxylamine or phenylhydrazine to form oxime or hydrazone, undergo silver mirror reaction, can undergo Conicoro reaction, and can also generate carboxylate salts and esters.

Usage
Glyoxalic acid can be used in the synthesis of a variety of reactions.
Glyoxylic acid is used in Hopkins Cole reaction, which is used in the detection of tryptophan in proteins.
It reacts with phenol to get 4-hydroxymandelic acid, which on further reaction with ammonia gives hydroxyphenylglycine, as a precursor to the drug amoxicillin.
It is also used as a starting material for the preparation of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which is used to get atenolol.
