Usage
Potassium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic potash or potash lye, exists mainly in two industrial forms: solid and liquid. The solid form appears as white or light gray flakes, chunks, or rods, while the liquid form is a pale yellow liquid. Its chemical properties are similar to those of sodium hydroxide, possessing strong alkalinity and corrosiveness. It is easily soluble in water and releases a large amount of heat, also exhibiting deliquescence, meaning it can easily absorb moisture from the air and deliquesce, and can react with carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate. When dissolved in water, alcohol, or treated with acid, it releases a large amount of heat. A 0.1 mol/L solution has a pH of 13.5 (anhydrous). It has moderate toxicity, with a median lethal dose (oral, rat) of 1230 mg/kg. Currently, potassium hydroxide is mainly used to synthesize potassium carbonate, potassium permanganate, etc., and is primarily applied in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries.
Potassium hydroxide is mainly used as a raw material for the production of potassium salts, such as potassium permanganate and potassium carbonate. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used to produce potassium borohydride, Antishutong, silybin, progesterone, and testosterone propionate. In the light industry, it is used to produce potassium soap, alkaline batteries, and cosmetics (such as cold cream, snow cream, and shampoo). In the dye industry, it is used to produce vat dyes, such as vat blue RSN. In the electrochemical industry, it is used for electroplating, engraving, and so on. In the textile industry, it is used for printing, dyeing, bleaching, and mercerizing, and it is also widely used as a main raw material for manufacturing artificial fibers and polyester fibers. In addition, it is also used in metallurgical heating agents and leather degreasing, among other applications.
