Usage
2-Undecanone, also known as methyl nonyl ketone, is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a citrusy and rue-like aroma. It naturally occurs in Houttuynia cordata, bananas, strawberries, cloves, ginger, and Rutaceae plants. Its FEMA number is 3093, FDA number is 172.515, and CoE number is 150. Methyl nonyl ketone is an active ingredient in Houttuynia cordata, giving off a citrus scent, and is mainly used in pharmaceuticals and flavor production. It’s safer and more effective than DEET when used in mosquito repellents. According to China’s GB2760-2011 standard, it’s an approved food flavoring used in the formulation of edible flavors. It can also be used as an intermediate in the production of fragrances and in the pharmaceutical industry to produce houttuynin. Additionally, due to its strong smell, research from North Carolina State University shows that 2-Undecanone can also be used as an insecticide or mosquito repellent.
