Usage
2,3-Dicyanopropionic acid ethyl ester is an intermediate of the insecticide fipronil.
Used as an intermediate in pesticides
The preparation method involves adding a solution of potassium cyanide and ethyl cyanoacetate into a reaction flask, using dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. Formaldehyde solution is slowly added to this solution while keeping the reaction temperature at 5°C. After finishing the addition, the reaction continues at 20°C for 15 hours. Then, the reaction mixture is poured into ice water, the organic layer is separated, the aqueous layer is extracted with solvent, the organic layers are combined, dried, and the solvent is removed to get the product. Reaction equation: HCHO + KCN + CNCH2COOC2H5 → CNCH2—CHCNCOOC2H5
