Usage
Mesitylene (also known as 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, molecular formula C9H12) has a molecular structure where the carbon atoms in the benzene ring form σ bonds via sp2 hybrid orbitals, while other carbon atoms form σ bonds via sp3 hybrid orbitals, making it a functional group found in various organic compounds. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon obtained when three hydrogens on the benzene ring are symmetrically replaced by three methyl groups. It is widely found in coal tar and some petroleum products. It is a colorless liquid, toxic, flammable, and explosive. Its freezing point is -44.72°C, melting point -44.7°C, boiling point 164.7°C, and relative density 0.8652 (20/4°C). Mesitylene can be oxidized with dilute nitric acid to produce 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid. Pure mesitylene is prepared by gas-phase catalytic dehydration of acetone at 300–500°C.
Organic synthesis raw material, used to produce trimesic acid, as well as antioxidants, epoxy resin curing agents, polyester resin stabilizers, and alkyd resin plasticizers, and to produce 2,4,6-trimethylaniline for making dyes like reactive brilliant blue and K-3R.
Mesitylene is an important raw material in organic chemical industry. It can be used to produce various dye intermediates such as xylene, trimellitic acid, and trimellitic anhydride, as well as antioxidants, polyester resin curing agents, stabilizers, and alkyd resin plasticizers. Being a good solvent, mesitylene is flammable, irritating, and has a very low freezing point. In the electronics industry, it is used as a developer for silicone photo films. Mesitylene is also a common volatile organic compound (VOC) in cities, mainly generated from combustion. It plays an important role in many atmospheric chemical reactions, including the formation of aerosols and tropospheric ozone. Because the three hydrogens on its aromatic ring share the same chemical environment, the hydrogen NMR spectrum of mesitylene shows only one peak around 6.8 ppm corresponding to three hydrogens. Therefore, mesitylene is sometimes used as an internal standard in NMR measurements of organic samples containing aromatic protons.
