 Usage

Lignin, also known as wood substance or lignocellulose, is a complex aromatic polymer found in plant fibers. Its properties vary depending on the source of the lignin and the methods used for its extraction and purification. The color of isolated lignin ranges from light cheese color to dark brown. It has no optical activity. Its refractive index is 1.61, and its density is 1.25–1.40 g/cm³. The molecular weight ranges from a few hundred to several hundred thousand, showing polydispersity. The molecular weight of lignin from milled wood is around 10,000–20,000, while lignin from grasses is about 7,000–9,000. Its molecular shape is roughly spherical or block-like. It is insoluble in common neutral organic solvents. Lignin is thermoplastic, and its softening temperature depends on its molecular weight and moisture content. Dry isolated lignin generally softens at 120–200°C. The thermoplasticity of lignin is closely related to the pulp and paper industry as well as wood processing.

Lignin is one of the three main components of woody cellulose and is widely found in woody tissues. It's a biopolymer with a three-dimensional network structure and is the second largest biomass resource after cellulose. It’s also the only renewable aromatic material in nature. The main role of lignin is to harden the cell walls by forming an interwoven network, providing resistance to compression, and it also helps prevent biological attack and water erosion, with additional functions like antibacterial, antioxidant, UV protection, and flame retardant properties. However, since lignin in nature is often connected with cellulose and hemicellulose, it’s very difficult to isolate lignin without damaging its structure.

Lignin is a substance found in plants. It plays a crucial role in the evolution of plants. Before lignin formed, land plants were very short during the Permian period, usually around 0.5–1.2 meters tall, due to factors like gravity and nutrient transport. Back then, plants were also quite fragile, with poor hardness and toughness. After lignin appeared, land plants became better at resisting gravity and evolved systems to transport nutrients. This change allowed plants to grow much taller, from around 1 meter to tens of meters, even hundreds of meters. The emergence of lignin had a big impact on plants. It’s one of the key factors that allowed land plants to thrive and develop more successfully on Earth.

Alkaline lignin can be used to make a fruit color-protection solution, including the following ingredients by weight: 5.0-6.5 parts alkaline lignin, 1.5-2.5 parts tin(II) citrate, 1000-1500 parts ethanol, and 800-3000 parts water. In industry, due to its good dispersibility, adhesion, and surface activity, lignin is often used directly in its macromolecular modified form. This is the main way lignin is used in industrial applications. Lignin and its modified products have excellent dispersibility and surface activity, giving them a wide range of established industrial uses: lignin can be used as a stabilizer for dye solutions, a cement grinding aid, a dispersant for pesticides and fungicides, a stabilizer for clay or solid fuel suspensions, a drilling mud conditioner, and a corrosion inhibitor and scale inhibitor for circulating cooling water, among others. Lignosulfonates can also be used as emulsifiers for petroleum, asphalt, wax, and so on.
